Panasonic buys extra Ku-band capacity from AsiaSat 5 for in-flight satellite broadband

Panasonic Avionics Corporation will be enhancing its Global Communications Service by obtaining additional Ku-band capacity on the AsiaSat 5 operated by Asia Satellite Telecommunications Co. Ltd. The aextra bandwith capacity will improve the in-flight Internet-from-satellite service that Panasonic provides to aircraft traveling on Middle Eastern and Indian routes.

The two companies consider the Middle East and India to be strategic markets. Additional transponder space on AsiaSat 5 will allow Panasonic to keep offering fast and affordable bandwidth to an ever growing number of aircraft that use the Company’s Internet-by-satellite products.

Panasonic’s Global Communications Service covers a broad scope of services. EXConnect, for example, offers two-way satellite broadband connectivity for passenger and crew applications like Internet-on-satellite connectivity, voice and data applications, and real-time airline operational data monitoring and transmission.

Meanwhile, passengers who want to stay in touch with loved ones or keep track of their work during a long flight can do so with eXPhone. Panasonic collaborated with AeroMobile for in-flight mobile phone technology that lets passengers use their mobile, Smartphone, BlackBerry, and GSM-enabled tablets and laptops for various purposes and applications at an altitude of 35,000 feet.

Finally, the eXTV television network delivers in-flight television programming to aircraft flying all over the world. The Panasonic satellite TV service offers regional channels and several international channels, allowing passengers to enjoy live, uninterrupted TV content during long flights.

AsiaSat 5 is a broadband satellite with a wide footprint and high-power Ku-band beams. Operated by AsiaSat, the platform supports both ground-based fixed and mobile satellite communications systems as well as in-flight communication and entertainment.
